Founded by entrepreneur Bryan Benitez McClelland, Bambike is a Philippine-based socio-ecological enterprise that produces handmade bikes.
The Bambike logo depicts three elements that convey the organization’s core principles: an inverted delta for a different kind of change through a new way of doing business, the sun represented by a bike sprocket propelling the revolution, and three stars representing People, Planet and Progress.
The enterprise has partnered up with Gawad Kalinga (GK), a community development organization for the poor, in its pursuit to end poverty by employing GK villagers as bamboo bike builders (a.k.a. Bambuilders). These Bambuilders used to take on jobs such as driving pedi-cabs, welding, farming and other odd jobs as day laborers.
As a result, these highly skilled craftsmen now work full-time in the Bambike workshop in their community.
Bambike practices fair trade as it places high importance on caring for people and initiating positive change in business. Moreover, Bambike provides programs such as scholarships, sponsorships for preschool teachers and weekly feeding programs for children.
Bambikes aims to build the greenest bikes on the planet. The company practices sustainable building and incorporates a bamboo nursery for reforestation in its programs.
You can embark on a Bambike Ecotour, an educational tour and ecotourism activity that offers a refreshing look at the historic walled city of Intramuros while riding a Bambike. Tour schedules are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. A tour may last from an hour to two and a half hours. You may also take Bambikes for a 30-minute ride at a minimum fee.
