Youth Vote Philippines (YVP) is an alliance of progressive and reform-minded youth groups and organizations pushing for the accomplishment of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG). YVP believes that these MDGs can be used as measures for human development and nation-building, and that the Filipino youth can help accomplish these goals by voting and by joining programs and events.
YVP’s primary aim is to educate the youth, who are the majority of the voting population. The alliance has a four-point agenda consisting of (1) voters' registration, (2) on-the-ground voters' education and engagement, (3) an online portal containing candidate information, and the (4) development of a youth agenda for policy-making and action.
By reaching out to the Filipino youth in as many ways as possible, YVP encourages them to participate in nation-building. These include seminars, voters' education forums, concerts, and school and mall tours. The alliance has also participated in events like “Rock the Vote” concerts and has organized “Make Noise for the MDGs! Mystreet” concert featuring performers like Gary Valenciano and Paul Zialcita. YVP merchandise like shirts and pins are also produced to help promote the cause.
Aside from these activities, YVP utilizes the power of new media thus making it easier for people to become literate and informed about elections and nation-building. They information and awareness but does not dictate whom to vote for. The alliance encourages all members of society, particularly the youth, to start conversations and initiate seminars to spark a community's sense of togetherness and duty to their community and to the nation.
The core group of the alliance consists of the following organizations: TAYO or Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations, Ayala Young Leaders Alliance, NUSP or National Union of Students in the Philippines, Young Public Servants, Student Council Alliance of the Philippines, Metropolitan Teen Theater League (PETA Youth), and Youth for Sustainable Development Assembly-Pilipinas. Other member organizations of the alliance include League of Filipino Students, College Editors Guild of the Philippines, You for Peace Advocacy Movement, and the iamjuan Movement. The alliance has also partnered with institutions like ABS-CBN (specifically their Boto Mo, I-Patrol group), GMA7 Eleksyon 2010, COMELEC, NAMFREL, Artists Revolution, RockEd, Transparency and Accountability Network, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, and many more. Recently, YVP signed on as one of the partner organizations of ABS-CBN in preparation for the 2016 elections.
