Mindanao Action Group for Children’s Rights and Protection (MAGCRP), began from the coming together of seven local child-focused NGOs in Mindanao - Tambayan Center, Bantay Bata 163, Kabataan Consortium, Adolescent Health Advocates of Davao City, Family Planning Organization of the Philippines-SoCSarGen, Gitib of Ozamis and Katilingban Alang sa Kalambuan in Zamboanga. They came together in response to the challenge of Save the Children Sweden which was to campaign against punishing children by inflicting physical pain or corporal punishment.
The new organization, founded in 2006, was first named Mindanao Convenors Against Corporal Punishment or MCCoP. Later, the organization was asked to continue its campaign against corporal punishment and violence against children, particularly in four cities in Mindanao. In 2009, the organization was renamed the Mindanao Action Group for Children’s Rights and Protection, or MAGCRP.
MAGCRP aims to continue becoming the lead advocate to institutionalize positive discipline and end corporal punishment and all forms of violence against children. This is implemented through empowering schools, institutions and communities, and promoting better protection mechanisms and synergies for action with children. In addition to this, the organization aims to make children empowered, prepared and protected from violence and even in emergencies.
Also among MAGCRP’s advocacies are the institutionalization of positive discipline and child protection policy, the passage of state legislation against corporal punishment, and the popularization of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNRC) and its Concluding Observations.
